COB technology
COB stands for chip-on-board, a technique in which several LED chips are mounted directly on a printed circuit board. In traditional LEDs, the LED chip is located in a small package that is coated with a layer of phosphor.
In COB LEDs, the LED housing is eliminated, the LED chips are positioned very close together and coated with a common phosphor layer. The close arrangement of the chips results in a continuous, homogeneous LED strip without spots, which is particularly advantageous in applications with high aesthetic demands.
Advantages of COB LED Strips
The additional advantages of COB LED Strip over SMD LED Strip are as follows:
- Even light distribution: the continuous light output without visible spots provides pleasant, homogeneous illumination.
- A wider beam angle (180°) than conventional LED strips (120°). This also helps to create a homogeneous light.
- Efficient heat dissipation: COB technology improves heat dissipation from the LED chip and contributes to an even longer lifespan.
Versatile application possibilities of COB LED strips
The advanced COB technology enables a wide range of applications. Whether as powerful general lighting or for atmospheric accentuation, LED COB strips are the ideal choice. The wide beam angle of 180° is particularly impressive for indirect lighting in suspended ceilings, while the uniform, homogeneous light pattern is impressive for direct lighting. The selection of different light colors (single color white, tunable white, RGBW) allows a wide range of lighting concepts to be implemented.

Example product | COB LED strip warm white | CCT COB LED strips | No, we don't offer it! In our opinion, it doesn't make sense, because no natural white is possible! | RGBW COB LED strips |
Installation of COB LED strips
Installation is simple and requires no tools. The COB strips can be glued directly into the aluminum profiles using the adhesive strips. These ensure adequate cooling, protect the COB strips from mechanical damage and can optionally be provided with an additional cover. Components required for installation
- COB strip as the central light source
- A 24V power supply converts the 230V mains voltage to the required 24V DC voltage for the LED strips
- A PWM dimmer allows you to adjust the brightness and control the light color
- The LED profiles are used for heat dissipation and to provide mechanical protection for the strips.
- The different LED connectors enable a solder-free connection and extension of the COB tapes
Frequently asked questions
What is COB LED?
COB LED (Chip-on-Board) is a technology in which multiple LED chips are mounted directly on a circuit board and coated with a common phosphor layer. This results in a uniform, dot-free light source with high brightness.
What is a COB LED strip?
A COB LED strip is a flexible light strip in which the LED chips are mounted directly on the circuit board and coated with a phosphor layer. This results in an LED strip without spots, with uniform light and high brightness.
Are COB LEDs dimmable?
Yes, COB LED strips are dimmable when used with a suitable dimmer or compatible LED driver. Typically, PWM dimmers are used and positioned between the strip and the power supply.
Do COB LED strips get warm?
COB LED strips generate less heat than conventional LEDs because the chips are thermally bonded directly to the circuit board. Good heat dissipation from the strip is still necessary and extends the lifespan.
Can COB LED strips be shortened?
Yes, the COB LED strips can be shortened at the regular cutting marks (between 25 and 100 mm depending on the type). Our Cut LED Strips can be shortened at any point and extended again if necessary.
