What is a relay?

A relay is an electromechanical or electromagnetic switch that is activated via a separate circuit (control circuit) and switches the load circuit on, off or over. In the control circuit there is a coil wound around an iron core. When current flows through it, a magnetic field builds up – as in an electromagnet – and moves the so-called armature. In the relay, this causes the load circuit to be closed (normally open contact) or interrupted (normally closed contact). The advantages of relays include the galvanic (potential-free) isolation between the two circuits and the option of switching high electrical power with low power in the control circuit.
